New proposals under the AIM Act in the US will soon restrict the use of certain HFC refrigerants that produce significant greenhouse gas emissions and are a risk to people and the environment.

GET READY FOR THE AIM ACT
The American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act directs the Environmental Protection (EPA) to phase down production and consumption of HFCs, which have a global warming potential (GWP) far higher than carbon dioxide.
It’s important to understand the implications of the EPA’s proposals under the Act, which come into effect in less than two years.
WHAT THE PROPOSALS MEAN
Under the new EPA proposals, all common higher GWP HFC refrigerants, including R134a, R404A and R410A, will be banned in most new refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump products and equipment.
FROM JANUARY 1, 2025
The manufacture and import of
products containing these restricted
HFCs will be prohibited.
FROM JANUARY 1, 2026
The sale, distribution and export of
products containing restricted HFCs
will also be prohibited.
BY 2036
Ultimately, the AIM Act is targeting an
85% reduction in the production and
consumption of all HFCs by 2036.
THE FUTURE-PROOF ALTERNATIVE
Unlike HFCs, natural refrigerants such as carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrocarbons produce either negligible or no greenhouse emissions, and offer no environmental risks. As companies address the issues of massively scaling back greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement on climate change, the choice of natural refrigerants becomes an ever more logical one.
